Sony Seemingly Put PlayStation VR on the Backburner During E3 2018

The most recent E3 conference was quite an exciting one. Many games were announced, and it seems the VR industry will get a few new offerings as well. However, Sony is seemingly less keen on pushing its position in the VR market forward. In fact, the Sony keynote all but skipped over VR, which took a lot of people by surprise.

What has Sony Planned for VR?

To put all of this into perspective, it seems Sony isn’t giving up on VR gaming just yet. Various titles were showcased during E3 2018, although all of them were hinted at well in advance. It does appear there were no real surprises to speak of, which has a fair few people concerned as of right now. This seems to indicate the PlayStation VR ecosystem will not receive much additional support from Sony moving forward.

For the average E3 viewer and fan, the PlayStation VR announcements were quite lackluster. Only one title got some decent big stage time, whereas everything else was glossed over fairly quickly. While Trover Saves the Universe looks like a fun VR platformer, it is not the AAA title people had hoped for. It seems AAA titles of the PS4, as well as the PS5 rumors, are the focus of attention right now.

All of this begs the question as to why Sony isn’t paying much attention to virtual reality. Although it has the biggest gaming platform outside of mobile gaming, Sony isn’t too bothered with any real marketing. That in itself is a bit strange, although no other manufacturer comes even close tot he company’s success. There’s also no new VR hardware planned, which was a bit disappointing.

It will be interesting to see how Sony tackles VR moving forward. Given the company’s dominant position, there is no real incentive for them to keep expanding. Not actively getting involved in the development of AAA games for VR is a bit worrisome, although it seems there is no real need for it either. Plenty of exciting titles will come to this platform regardless, which is all that matters in the end.
