There is still a long way to go until virtual reality becomes mainstream. Most of the efforts in this regard remain somewhat fractured. Steam, the popular gaming platform, is trying to play its part in this regard. The platform now supports all VR broadcasts provided by NextVR. A promising development which can expose a lot more people to virtual reality broadcasts.

Steam Makes Another Power Move

Very few gaming platforms have become as successful as Steam. Despite facing growing competition from all angles, the platform still has the most users and buyers of video games. To further capitalize on this position, parent company Valve is looking at other avenues. Introducing support for virtual reality broadcasts is an interesting concept in that regard.

It is no secret the majority of VR headset owners are also gamers. Most virtual reality content focuses on video gaming, thus the integration of NextVR into Steam makes a lot of sense. It has been coming for quite some time now. Because of this development, Steam users can now enjoy NBA, NHL, ICC soccer, and WWE matches in virtual reality. Concerts and stand-up comedy shows are also on the menu.

NextVR CEO David Cole adds:

“NextVR is driven to engage the largest possible audience to experience our content in virtual reality. Steam is a critically important platform to reach active virtual reality users. We’re excited to put our unparalleled live sports and entertainment experiences at the fingertips of the vibrant Steam user-base.”

The Steam-based version of NextVR’s app is compatible with most major headsets. That list includes HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality Devices. Although there are separate apps available for those platforms, having one unified approach can get more people excited. Additionally, the app can be downloaded through Steam directly, which makes this whole ordeal a lot more straightforward.
