Virtual reality is an industry which is still trying to find its place. It seems there are some interesting developments taking place right now. With various exhibitions taking place in VR as we speak, things have certainly evolved in the right direction. There is now also an Oscar for virtual reality, although this doesn’t mean we will see an official virtual reality at the Oscars anytime soon

Official VR Content Wards are Coming

It is always interesting to see how things have been evolving in the world of virtual reality. Although this market is still pretty small right now things are certainly shaping up nicely. More specifically, there is an official Oscar award for the VR exhibition known as Carne y Arena This exhibition is created by Alejandro Inarritu, who most people now as the director of Birdman and The Revenant.

This award comes at an interesting time for the virtual reality industry. Being able to experience new forms of content through VR has become somewhat popular all over the world. This award is given as a “reward recognizing a visionary and powerful experience in storytelling”. This goes to show there may very well be a bright future ahead for visual content in the VR sector. Only time will tell how this will evolve.

AMPAS President John Bailey comments on the situation as follows:

“Iñárritu’s multimedia art and cinema experience is a deeply emotional and physically immersive venture into the world of migrants crossing the desert of the American southwest in early dawn light. More than even a creative breakthrough in the still emerging form of virtual reality, it viscerally connects us to the hot-button political and social realities of the U.S.-Mexico border.”

The bigger question is whether or not the Academy will officially recognize VR as a category. So far, there is no official recognition for this nascent industry right now It is evident there is a real chance we may see some official awards for VR content in the future. Whether or not those will be Oscars, remains highly doubtful. It is the first special Oscar is awarded since Toy Story 1. Quite a boon for the VR industry, to say the very least.
