The developer uploaded nine levels of the popular shooter to the meme cryptocurrency network. DOOM is now available and hosted on the Dogecoin Blockchain.
Technically, this became possible when the Ordinals protocol appeared in the Bitcoin blockchain and then its analogues in some other networks, including Dogecoin.
1993’s DOOM Revived on Dogecoin Blockchain
The DOOM series of games appeared in 1993, and the release of subsequent versions continues to this day. However, this is a first-person shooter where the main plot element is the destruction of opponents, including monsters and demons.
A developer under the nickname Mini Doge announced the appearance of DOOM on the Doge meme token, who contributed the game to the blockchain on its 30th anniversary. The 1993 version, released for download, includes nine levels suitable for public release without legal issues.
Note: Launched in January 2023, the Ordinals protocol enables direct writing of images and other data types into the smallest units of cryptocurrency without needing a separate token. |
On the Dogecoin network, a similar protocol to Ordinals was launched on May 9 last year. It allows you to create an inscription tied to each indivisible unit of DOGE, which is called “Elon” (Elon – in honor of the most famous fan of the meme cryptocurrency, Elon Musk).
In this case, each such record (inscription) is immutable and remains forever saved in the blockchain, similar to an NFT.
Doom Sparks Huge Dogecoin Frenzy
The launch of Ordinals and similar solutions provoked a speculative rush, both in the blockchain of the first cryptocurrency and in other networks. Since the introduction of the ability to issue NFTs and other tokens on the Dogecoin blockchain, the daily transaction volume has increased by more than 20 times.
Developers like Mini Doge believe that the use of Ordinals will spark increased interest in the Dogecoin ecosystem, which includes NFT collections, games, and various tokens issued on the blockchain.
“The addition of DOOM to the Dogecoin blockchain demonstrates that anyone can store even a small game forever on the blockchain, highlighting the ability to securely manage and store a wide range of digital content,” Mini Doge told CoinDesk.
