Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed his thoughts on memecoins , a unique asset class that has now become very popular among members of the cryptocurrency community.
Can memecoins create real value?
Buterin returned to his ideas from a decade ago, when he envisioned token issuance as an innovative way to finance meaningful public projects on a large scale, distinct from traditional markets and institutions. He suggested that coins like AntiCancerCoin and ClimateCoin could directly support causes such as cancer research and environmental protection.
Now the conversation has turned to memecoins, which are often criticized for their lack of content and for the periodic formation of negative communities. Ethereum expert Polynya condemned the crypto community for “lack of any moral compass.” He criticized the emergence of memecoins that promote racism, sexism and other forms of offensive content. He argued that these tokens primarily serve to redistribute wealth to the detriment of many, benefiting only a select group of dishonest individuals.

However, the Ethereum co-founder sees an opportunity to use the playful nature of memecoins to achieve positive results. He gives examples of charity coins that have contributed to areas such as anti-aging research and cultural projects. These projects demonstrate the potential of memecoins to support meaningful initiatives. “I appreciate people’s desire to have fun, and I would rather see the crypto space go with the flow rather than against it. And so I want higher quality entertainment projects that make a positive contribution to the ecosystem and the world around us (and not just “bring in new users”) to receive more attention,” Buterin wrote.
It also offers a more fun and inclusive approach through “Robin Hood games.” Such games will provide entertainment and redistribute wealth to lower-income players. He notes the success of play-and-earn games that uplift economically disadvantaged people, and suggests that fun, engaging games can create an environment that is positive for everyone involved.
Advocating Memecoins with a Purpose
Essentially, Vitalik Buterin advocates a transition to creating memecoins that make a positive contribution to society and the global community. The co-founder of Ethereum vision encourages developers to embrace innovation that uplifts and unites, transforming memecoins from a subject of skepticism to a tool of social good and entertainment. “If the goal is to satisfy people’s desire for entertainment, then we should not create carbon copy coins, but develop more complex and interesting games, and games and communities in which low-income players are more likely to improve their financial situation.”
