Is Motorola too Late to the VR Headset Party?

More and more companies are poised to enter the virtual reality headset market, by the look of things. One of the latest companies to do exactly that is Motorola, albeit this has still not been officially confirmed at this time. The rumors are swirling, though, and it seems the company itself is more than interested in exploring this opportunity in the very near future.

The Road Ahead for Motorola

It is evident Motorola could make quite an impact on the VR headset industry as we speak. Even though they would face some very stiff competition from a dozen other companies, this ecosystem is still largely unexplored. Right now, no company can even attempt to dethrone Sony as the market leader for non-mobile VR headsets, which means more competition is more than welcome. Whether or not that competitor will be Motorola, is a different matter altogether.

To put this into perspective, it seems the company is scheduled to release their VR headset pretty soon. It will be known as the Virtual Viewer Moto Mod, which is not exactly the most appealing name whatsoever. From the information which can be found on the internet, it seems the new headset will be quite similar to the early version of the Samsung Gear VR. That does mean this is a bare-bones unit first and foremost, although it remains to be seen if that is a good thing.

At the same time, the new Motorola headset will seemingly operate in similar fashion to the Google Daydream. More specifically, users will still need a capable smartphone to use alongside this new headset, but that has become far less of a problem in recent months. It also sees the Motorola headset will use the mobile Daydream VR application, although it remains to be seen how the situation will pan out exactly.

The big question is whether or not Motorola can make an impact on the VR industry as a whole Even though this market is still open to a lot of emerging competitors, Motorola may very well be a bit too late to the party in this regard. Moreover, it will heavily depend on whether or not any non-Motorola phones will be compatible with this unit. Right now, that does not appear to be the case, although we will find out more when the unit actually launches.
