Virtual reality, as well as augmented and mixed reality, are slowly becoming more popular in the educational sector. More specifically, Columbia College is introducing coding courses for all of these nascent industries, which is rather interesting to keep an eye on. It is an important development in the world of virtual reality, which will hopefully lead to a more widespread adoption overall.

An Intriguing Decision by Columbia College

Getting more students interested in virtual and augmented reality is not all that easy. Especially not given the lackluster appeal both of these technologies have right now. Even though both VR and AR pose good challenges for aspiring developers, few people are actively willing to develop new types of content or applications for either ecosystem right now. Columbia College is trying to change all of that in a positive manner.

With their new coding courses tailored to VR and AR development, things are heading in an interesting direction. They are the first educational institutions to effectively introduce a 360-degree audio production course for virtual reality. Additionally, they are one of the few higher-education institutions to offer both VR and AR courses in general, which will undoubtedly introduce a fair few interesting challenges along the way.

Columbia College Vice Provost for Digital Learning Robert Green comments:

“Columbia is excited to offer these valuable new media courses online. They are taught by top industry experts and structured to help people succeed in a rapidly changing industry. AR/VR is a perfect fit for Columbia Online. It combines Columbia’s emphasis on creative practice with cutting-edge career opportunities to immerse continuing education students in state-of-the-art best practices at the intersection of arts, coding, and technology.”

What makes these courses so interesting is how they both last eight weeks in total. They will be taught by award-winning, industry experts, including Dekker Dreyer, Joel Douek, and Austin McCasland. All of these individuals have built up a solid reputation in either VR or AR, and they will share their expertise with the students at Columbia College through the online education platform known as Columbia Online.
