There is an obvious correlation between virtual reality and sports. Not just in terms of content watching, but also as a way to enhance the overall experience. Over in Sansar, there is a new VR action sport hoverderby people may want to check out. It is a user-generated virtual sport, yet one that will certainly shake things up.

A Fictitious Sport in VR

For those who have never heard of hoverderby, do not be alarmed. It is a sport that doesn’t actually exist in real life, which makes it all the more suited for virtual reality. Sansar, the subsidiary of Linden Lab, has built this 3D world with their own tools, store, and currency. As such the hoverderby venture is the first sport the team came up with, and one that can only be played in VR with enough room to move around.

It has to be said, hoverderby feels like no other sport known to mankind, other than a futuristic version of dodgeball  It is one of the most intriguing forms of sports, which may effectively confuse a lot of people at first. That is also part of the fun, as you immediately want to get acquainted with the basics and begin improving as soon as possible.

Putting the actual gameplay into worlds is pretty difficult. There are two teams, and players will hover around the field. Firing at other team members is done using VR controller triggers, or a keyboard and mouse for desktop users. Any opponent who is hit is unable to fire at other team members, and they need to get back to their “safe circle”. It is a lot more challenging than it sounds, as can be seen in the video below this article.

Winning the game is achieved by capturing as many opponents as possible. All of this needs to be achieved within 5 minutes, which seems rather brief. Even so, it is evident most players will need a breather afterward, as this game is a lot more exhausting than one thinks. Hoverderby even has its own training and practices, with Sunday being the game day. A very peculiar offering to keep an eye on.
