It is not evident to bring more content to the VR industry. Thankfully, companies such as Plex try to make a positive impact. The company rolled out Samsung Gear VR support for its native application earlier this week. For viewers, it will bring a whole new level of immersion to watching content, even though videos are not ‘upgraded” to VR.
Plex VR Lands on Samsung VR Headsets
It is good to have Plex on board of the VR bandwagon. The company’s app is used by millions all over the world. Its convenient storing and streaming solution makes life a lot easier for a lot of people. Unfortunately, accessing your content in VR has been impossible until now. Owners of the Samsung Gear VR can view their entire Plex library in virtual reality from now on.
Even though Plex VR is available for Google’s Daydream headset as well, it is good to see more devices being supported. Especially with mobile VR taking off, companies need to adjust to these trends in quick succession. Given the price point of the Samsung Gear VR, this development will bring a lot of positive attention to Plex as a company.
As one would expect, the process is quite simple. Users boot up the app, log in, and see a virtual menu with all of their content. It is also possible to select different environments including a massive flatscreen TV, outer space, and even a drive-in theater. This latter option is only available to Plex Pass subscribers, but the subscription offers a lot of other benefits as well.
It is also important to note Plex VR also supports 3D movies and 360-degree videos. This will require some tinkering with file names, but Plex experts will have no problems unlocking this feature. There is no subtitle support for now, and accessing photos to music is off-limits. In future versions, you can watch content together with friends, like you can on the Google Daydream.
