Wireless is the future of VR headsets, for obvious reasons. No one likes a tethered experience by any means. Going wireless with VR is an interesting challenge, although one that is difficult to tackle. Lenovo and Google’s new VR headset will be fully wireless, yet costs $400.

Expensive Wireless VR Won’t Help Anyone

No one will be surprised to see VR headset manufacturers scramble to go wireless. Lenovo and Google have joined forces to achieve this goal exactly. Their new co-branded headset will be completely wireless and not require any computer or mobile device connection at any given moment it is very similar to the Oculus Go in this regard, but with a few twists.

More specifically, the Mirage Solo with Daydream is quite a bit more expensive. Compared to Oculus Go’s $199 price tag, this new headset will go for sale at the price of $399. It is a very hefty price tag that will not be to the liking of most would-be VR enthusiasts.

Selling this unit will pose to be challenging regardless of the price. The Mirage Solo with Daydream has no unique VR content to speak of, unique games, or anything to do one cannot achieve with the Oculus Go. It does have the better hardware, with a higher resolution display, tracking cameras, and six degrees of freedom.

Compared to the Oculus Go, it is seemingly more versatile. Whether or not that warrants a price tag twice as high, is a different matter altogether. Without enough content to take advantage of these features, there’s no reason to pick up it up at that price. Even so, the involvement of Google will undoubtedly lead to some interesting content creation moving forward.
