Virtual reality can benefit from more content people can enjoy. Although train sets is not necessarily something one would expect to see in VR, it is not a very real possibility. Gaugepunk Games has developed ROlling Line, which is a rather different kind of VR game altogether. Diversity is key in any industry, and VR gaming is no different in this regard.
Rolling Line is a big Success
One has to commend Gaugepunk Games for trying to do something different when it comes to VR gaming. Rolling Line is an intriguing creation which looks very similar to a model train set. Moreover, it follows the existing train line between the Picton ferry terminal and Kaikoura tunnels. Some people may question the validity of this concept, but there is a genuine interest in Rolling Line.
Netflix went out on a limb by offering a “show” which documents a multi-hour train ride. As such, it makes sense for companies to bring such an experience to virtual reality as well. Rolling Line has been a massive success to date, as quite a few copies have been sold already. Even the developers did not expect this initial success, but they won’t complain in the slightest.
In fact, lead developer Jack Huygens plans to further improve upon this VR game for at least six more months. Adding railways across different regions and even include the trans-alpine railway through the Southern Alps are some of the improvements to look forward to. The oddly soothing aspect about Rolling Line will undoubtedly continue to attract a lot of attention moving forward.
Another option coming to this game comes in the form of modification support. This allows players to add a lot more content to the game and share their creations with the rest of the world. Multiplayer support is also on the horizon, although it will be interesting to see how that plays out. Being able to take a train ride with other VR headset owners would certainly introduce a lot of positive changes.
