Lidl Unveils a $10 Headset in the United Kingdom

Various manufacturers are trying their hand at developing cheap VR headsets. Some of those products will work better than others. As such, supermarket chain Lidl is now entering the VR headset industry. Its new product has been introduced to UK consumers this week at the price of around $10.

Lidl has a VR Headset

In a way, it is anything but surprising to see supermarkets showcase their own VR headsets on the cheap. This does not mean the device is manufactured by Lidl itself, yet it does show how more and more companies aim to take VR into the mainstream. A cheap unit will certainly help in this regard, assuming it is worth the $10 in the first place.

Big was people’s surprise when they first discovered this cheap VR headset. That is not entirely surprising, as this was not officially communicated at first. It does require consumers to use a VR-compatible smartphone, but that is to be expected at such a low price point.

One could argue Lid’s headset is quite similar to the Google Cardboard unit. It has the same principle, but Lidl’s unit doesn’t use cardboard. Instead, it has a plastic body and combines with optical lenses and adjustable focus. It is not a device that will unlock the full potential of virtual reality by any means.

For those looking to dabble in VR during the summer holidays, however, Lidl’s device is well worth checking out. For those looking for something even cheaper, there are units which cost one-fifth of this device’s price. Consumers will get what they pay for, though, which is something to watch out for as well. More competition in this market can only be considered to be a good thing.
