There are many different use cases for virtual reality technology. The BBC, a major broadcasting network in the United Kingdom, is using VR for home renovation. It is not the first time the network shows an interest in this technology either, which further confirms virtual reality is here to stay.
Home Renovation Meets VR
Whenever a major TV broadcasting network shows an increasing interest in emerging technologies, things will undoubtedly get very interesting. In the case of the BBC, their attention to virtual reality has not gone by unnoticed over the past few years. Their latest venture comes in the form of a brand new TV show focused on home renovation.
More specifically, the BBC’s new show lets homeowners explore 360-degree videos of their new-look houses prior to renovating them. Known as Watch This Space, the BBC Two show has couples don VR headsets and explore different designs from different architects. This allows them to make a more carefully weighed decisions as to which design they like best. Being able to see it with one’s own eyes in the space they are familiar with is a very different take on home renovation altogether.
This is not the first time the BBC wants to incorporate virtual reality into its programs. Another new show was announced last week which goes by the name of Untold Story. In that particular show, directors will explore their own movies’ pre-production in virtual reality. There is also the current VR broadcast of World Cup 2018 games on the BBC, although that has not been the widespread success the broadcaster had hoped for at this stage.
It will be interesting to see if this new TV show can bring in a new audience for the BBC. One has to commend the broadcaster for experimenting with new technologies and showing the world how it can make an impact sooner or later. Home renovation and virtual reality is certainly an interesting mix to explore. There has also been an increase in using VR technology to sell houses, thus this new venture seemingly makes a lot of sense.
