The porn industry is genuinely excited about the potential offered by virtual reality. Various firms have begun making inroads in VR through new content offerings. Even so, the industry experts are urging companies such as Facebook and Samsung to embrace this porn-oriented VR revolution sooner rather than later.
VR Industry Continues to Shun Porn
Even though adult content can get a lot of consumers excited about virtual reality technology, a lot of major companies continue to prevent this from happening. Facebook, Samsung, and Sony all avoid porn content on their respective platforms, although that decision doesn’t necessarily make a lot of sense. For the porn industry leaders, it is a problem, as they miss out on a lot of potential revenue in the process.
As such, something will need to change. Naughty America executive Ian Paul claims companies such as Sony and Samsung are fearful of getting associated with adult content. One wouldn’t necessarily expect that to be a problem in 2018, even though certain stigmas still remain in place regardless. If technology giants remain overly cautious, they can hold back widespread VR adoption. Additionally, it will prevent the VR porn industry from growing accordingly, which is not a positive development either.
One thing to take into consideration is how virtual reality has no actual age restrictions. Minors can easily don a VR headset and access adult content that way. Allowing something like that to happen can expose tech giants to liability court cases in the long run. Finding the middle ground between allowing porn to gain traction and protecting consumers of all ages will not be easy.
It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out in the long run. Porn companies are looking for ways to tap into new revenue streams by taking this particular approach. For headset manufacturers, it is evident something will need to change if they want to promote industry growth in the coming years. It will be up to companies such as HTC, Samsung, and Sony to make a positive impact in this regard. Whether or not any company will take the plunge, is a different matter altogether.
