While reports of VR technoloy entering various technical domains such as healthcare, psychiatry, keep emerging on a near daily basis, sales figures related to VR hardware show that the industry at large is experiencing a decline in user interest.
About the Study
Thinkum, a data analysis company, recently conducted a study involving the sale of VR hardware on Amazon. And while the research primarily focused on a couple of key elements, it was able to conclusively say that overall VR sales had been dipping since the start of this year.
For starters, Thinkum looked at the sales records of the most popular VR headsets across a set period of time– the results for which have been noted below:
-
HTC Vive: One of the most widely loved pieces of VR hardware has seen a serous dip in its overall sales numbers. While the headset did pick up some steam earlier in May, the figures seem to once again be on the downslide.
-
Samsung VR Gear: Even though Samsung’s VR equipment never really gained the traction that the company had hoped for, the numbers show that sales have dropped even more since last September.
-
Oculus Go: Last but not least, Thinkum scrutinized customer interest towards one of the premier players within this niche’ market. Even though Oculus Go was a top selling item on Amazon in May, the headset has hardly sold any units within the past couple of months.
Final Take
While Virtual Reality as a tool for scientific research continues to garner more and more attention, the level of interest in terms of its game related offerings seem to be reducing. In any case, only time will tell if this trend is here to stay or not.
