Google still has relatively high expectations for the virtual reality industry. The technology giant has unveiled a new VR experience which captures and renders high-quality realistic images by using light fields. Welcome to Light Fields is a pretty interesting venture by Google in this regard, as it further paves the way for mass VR adoption.

Google Takes Another Stab at Virtual Reality

Technology giants have shown a keen interest in dealing with virtual reality technology. Google is paving the way for broader adoption of this technology through a wide range of ventures. Their Welcome to Light Fields is a new VR experience to render high-quality and realistic images from the real world. Although the app exists already, it has received a big update.

Users of the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headset scan grab welcome to Light Fields from the Stream store. Google will show off a new VR immersive experience based on this technology during the upcoming SIGGRAPH 2018 event in August of 2018. So far, the application has received a lot of positive feedback, mainly due to its wide range of “locations” users can visit.

Being able to be transported to exotic places in the real world is what makes light fields so appealing in the VR industry. Although it is one of the initial promises associated with virtual reality technology, achieving this goal is a lot more difficult than initially assumed. By tapping into light fields, the immersive experience can be taken to a whole new level altogether.

With this upcoming showcase, Google aims to demonstrate the potential and promise of light field VR technology. When it comes to immersing users in virtual reality,  there is still plenty of work to be done. Most current experiences lack detail and a real sense of effectively being transported to the location of choice. Light field technology brings realistic VR experiences to consumer-grade hardware. It is another step forward toward creating global VR adoption.
