Hamburg Wants to Become Europe’s Biggest VR Startup Hub

Even though it is a bit unclear what the future will hold for the VR industry, interesting efforts are taking place behind the scenes. Hamburg, the German city, has major plans to become a big VR startup hub. That is an interesting approach, especially when considering how this technology fails to convince the masses nearly every other day.

Hamburg has Bold Plans

One has to commend any city which is outspoken about its vision for virtual reality. This technology, while having tremendous potential, has not made the big impact so many people had hoped for. It is a useful concept, but none of the current concepts illustrate this quite well. As such, the search for new projects and companies is still ongoing. Hamburg wants to cater to VR startups from all over the world.

Considering how VR startups pop up around the globe, the need for a “hub” is more than apparent. Especially region where grants and tax breaks can be provided are in high demand. Hamburg can offer all of these aspects and benefits moving forward. While the initial focus will be on German VR companies, city officials also aim to attract European companies over the coming years.

Several key reasons can contribute to Hamburg’s success in this regard. More specifically, it has the highest concentration of creative agencies in Germany. Additionally, it is also easily accessible by train and water. That makes it a very appealing region for companies headquartered in Europe, although Hamburg is not hard to reach from other continents either.

The biggest hurdle may come in the form of getting people excited about virtual reality. The recently launched VRHQ project in Hamburg is designed to pave the way for broader adoption. It is a collaboration of four different startups who seek to complement one another in the virtual reality space. This further shows collaboration is the only way forward, even in this industry.
