Even though a lot of consumers remain on the fence about virtual reality, some manufacturers see great sales figures. The PlayStation VR, for example, has been solved over 1 million times. That is quite an impressive number, considering this VR headset is limited to the PlayStation platform. Then again, it is an affordable solution which gamers seem to enjoy quite a bit.
PlayStation VR Is More Popular Than You’d Think
It is quite interesting to see Sony publish rather positive sales figures regarding their PlayStation VR headset. Given the disappointing global sales of all VR hardware, at least Sony is making a positive impact. With over 1 million units sold, the company is definitely making a global impact on the VR industry. Considering this headset only launched in October of 2016, that number is quite impressive, to say the least.
Moreover, this paints an interesting future for other VR headset sin existence right now. The HTC Vive and Oculus Rift are both very popular headsets. However, their sales figures are unknown to this very date. It is believed both companies sold significantly fewer units than Sony, though. The undisputed market leader is still the Samsung Gear VR, with over 5 million units sold globally.
The bigger question is what we can expect for the future of PlayStation VR. Sony has plans to double down on the hardware, which is a positive sign. Even though the future of VR hardware remains a big unknown, Sony will forge ahead with this venture without holding back. The company also feels sales will continue to pick up throughout the remainder of 2017. That is, assuming one can find a store which has the unit in stock.
To achieve this goal, the PlayStation VR will need additional quality content. Sony Interactive Entertainment America CEO Shawn Layden did not name any particular titles we can expect. However, he did hint at how Sony will “find ways to bump up the quality and quantity of VR content”. For a VR headset which costs around US$400, the PlayStation VR is one of the most affordable yet powerful products on the market today.
