Google held a major media event this week in San Francisco. During the Pixel media event, the company showed the entire world an updated Google Daydream View VR headset will be coming to the public soon. More specifically, the newer version is slightly lighter, has an improved lens, and will cost $100. It is still a  very cheap headset compared to what customers get in return, though. You will still need a compatible Android phone to fully take advantage of this new VR headset.

Updated Google Daydream View VR Headset is Coming

It is about time we see the next generations of virtual reality headsets near the end of 2017 and early 2018. Sony recently unveiled their updated VR headset, which introduces some minor but worthwhile changes. In the case of Google, their Daydream View headset will get a better lens and cuts down on weight by a notable margin. In exchange for these upgrades, users will need to pay $20 more compared to the current generation, which puts the new price at $100.

Similar to the first generation of the Daydream View headset, users will still need a compatible high-end Android smartphone to benefit from VR technology. It is still a far better option compared to buying a $400 VR headset which users may not like to use for more than a few days. Spending $100 is not exactly splurging money either, and it may introduce a lot of new people to virtual reality moving forward.

Additionally, Google made another major VR-related announcement. Thanks to a new partnership with IMAX, DayDream View owners will be able to enjoy certain IMAX 3D movies free of charge through the Google Play Movies service. This is a pretty interesting development, as the VR industry certainly needs a lot more content not related to games and apps. Although it remains unclear what type of content users can expect exactly, it certainly is something to look forward to.

For the time being, there is no official release date for the upcoming Daydream View VR headset. We do know there will be three different colors; as the unit comes in charcoal, fog, and coral. The price of $100 appears to be a given, though, albeit it is not unlikely there may be a promotional bundle at some point in the future. It is good to see Google not give up on VR just yet.
