The potential number of use cases for VR technology is nearly limitless. Not all of these options are designed to cater to mainstream consumers either. Home Team Academy in Singapore is exploring a pretty unique angle. The team wants to sue VR into its training solution for crime scene investigators. An unusual approach, but it seemingly offers a fair few advantages.

Using VR to Hunt Down Criminals

It is evident a virtual environment can be a viable training tool. For crime scene investigators, digitizing a crime scene often leads to new clues and valuable insights. Home Team Academy in Singapore is taking this concept one step further. They effectively incorporate VR technology into its crime scene investigator training sessions. This approach also caters to the digital habits of the current personnel in training.

Although this trial is not new, it is only now getting a lot of attention. Home Team Academy first experimented with VR in late 2017. Ever since, over 200 senior officers partook in training exercises featuring this new technology. The overall response has been overwhelmingly positive, which is a good sign. Because of this new technology, investigators learned to look at a crime scene in many different ways.

Although this setup is expensive, it can easily pay off. With a price tag of $15,000 per setup, it is not something that will become sued globally anytime soon. However, the tracking of hand gestures and movements has proven to be a major selling point. It is also a safe yet controlled training environment where making mistakes is not fatal. Instead, it is designed to help trainees hone their craft.

This environment lets officials gather facts, survey and process evidence, label pieces of evidence, et cetera. Further and more advanced functionality includes testing for blood and taking photos for future documentation. All of these concepts will prove to be crucial for current and future crime scene investigators alike. VR simulations of this kind improve the number of practical sessions to be organized by quite a margin.
