Oculus wants to ensure their VR headset finds its way to consumer homes around the world. In an effort to step up their marketing plan, the company now offers special discounts on its Oculus Rift + Touch package. Select retailers will sell the headset and offer a US$100 worth of Oculus Store Credit as well. This “sale” runs until June 25, 2017.
Oculus Begins an Aggressive Marketing Campaign
Albeit expensive VR headsets will give users the best experience, they are not flying off the shelves by any means. PlayStation is leading the non-mobile VR headset race, as they sold over 1 million units. Oculus has not seen such a degree of success yet. The company acknowledges something will have to change sooner rather than later. In a new marketing effort, Oculus is now offering US$100 worth of store credit to everyone who buys a Rift headset and Touch controllers.
To be more specific, this offer is only valid at participating merchants. In the US, UK, Canada, Germany, and France, Amazon is your best bet. Best Buy may follow suit in the US, albeit this has not been officially confirmed. UK VR Enthusiasts can pick up the combo deal at GAME and Scan shops as well. It also appears MediaMarkt Germany is on board for this promotion.
It is quite interesting to see the Facebook-owned company make such a surprising decision. Oculus Rift headsets have been praised by users, but they remain rather expensive. Adding the Touch controllers will only make the whole ordeal even more costly. Offering some store credit in exchange for buying the bundle is an interesting decision for sure. Do keep in mind this promotion will end on June 25, 2017, though.
VR Hardware manufacturers have to come up with a new battle plan, to say the least. If they want to bring the competition to PlayStation, they need to find a way to boost sales. Whether or not this promotion is the right way to go, remains to be seen. The Oculus Rift + Touch bundle costs $598 right now. If you subtract the US$100 worth of credit, that brings down the price to US$498. A price below US$500 certainly makes it worth considering for a lot of people.
