Bringing board games to virtual reality is a venture well worth exploring, to say the least. Settlers of Catan is one of the most iconic board games in recent decades. To this day, it is still a very popular game which is played rather often by enthusiasts. It now turns out some designs are bringing this game to virtual reality, with a strong focus on the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR. Although a release date has not been announced yet, the game looks pretty appealing.

A VR Version of Settlers of Catan is Coming

On paper, it makes a lot of sense to bring board games to virtual reality. More specifically, any type of board game can do quite well in VR. Settlers of Catan is one of those games involving a fair bit of strategy and thinking. It is a perfect addition to the VR catalog for both Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR. The game was originally demoed at PAX last week and should come to market in the coming months. An official date has not been announced just yet, though.

Catan VR will bring the gameplay of Settlers of Catan to virtual reality. This is a major development for the industry, to say the least.Considering how the original board game sold over 20 million copies, it is certainly possible the VR version will yield a lot of initial success as well.Experiment 7 is focusing heavily on board games for virtual reality right now, which is opposite sign. They also created DUngeon Chess not too long ago. That particular game mixed Dungeons & Dragons elements with chess.

The initial implementation of Catan VR will revolve around the core game most people have come to love over the years. Other parts will be added over time, as the developers have big plans to keep improving upon the existing game for quite some time to come. It is unclear what they have planned exactly, as it will heavily rely on how the community responds to the initial version. Implementing the base game rules to VR will be pretty challenging, to say the least.

Moreover, bring such an iconic game to virtual reality serves another purpose. It will serve as an example of how players can learn to appreciate board games through a medium which virtually explains itself. Most of these games have different turns to keep in mind. Visual aids will be of incredible value in this regard, that much is evident. Catan is also a natural choice when it comes to bringing iconic games to virtual reality. It is one of the biggest brands for Asmodee, although it will not be their last VR venture by any means.
