A few weeks ago, Oculus announced a major discount for their Rift headset and controller bundle. It now appears Sony is taking a similar approach with their PlayStation VR. As of today, the bundle has been discounted by 25%. Instead of paying US$400, the headset including camera and three games, can now be yours for US$300. Competition is heating up in the world of head-mounted displays, to say the least.
Sony Drops PlayStation VR Bundle Price
A discounted PlayStation VR bundle is never a bad thing. Even though Sony has no issues selling them at US$400 a discounted bundle is always appreciated. The required camera is included, although you will still need to purchase motion controllers separately. Not all games require said controllers, though, which is a good thing. Depending on which games you hope to play, getting a regular DS4 may be more than sufficient.
It is a bit unclear why Sony is discounting the bundle right now. Oculus has taken a similar approach a few weeks ago. Then again, their headset is still more expensive than the PlayStation VR, even at its discounted price. That Oculus bundle does include the proprietary controllers, though. Sony will kee pushing its VR headset to more users at this rate, which is a good sign. We have a lot of fun going through the VR game collection on PlayStation lately, as it contains some great games.
Among the game includes are Until Dawn” Rush of Blood, RIGS, and PlayStation VR worlds. Interested parties can pick up the entire bundle for US$300 on Amazon and use the code PSVRGAMES. It is unclear if the same offering will come to other retailers as well, but it does not appear to be the case. The games themselves can be downloaded once your order is completed, as they are not included as a physical version.
It would be interesting to see HTC come up with a new deal in the future. When all major VR headset manufacturers start to compete based on price, interesting things are bound to happen. Sony has already sold over 1 million VR units, making them a clear leader over both Oculus and HTC combined at this time. This new sale will only widen the gap by the look of things. Do keep in mind you will still need to buy a PS4 console, though, but those are priced attractively as well.
