Shared worlds are quite interesting concepts in the world of virtual technology. Setting up a virtual space is one thing, but being able to share it with others will elevate this technology to a whole new level. For the time being, there are only a handful of projects working on making this a reality. It is evident shared worlds will become a lot more prominent in VR moving forward.
Why Shared Worlds Matter So Much
It is evident virtual reality needs to become a social experience first and foremost. Although this technology can be used for many different purposes, social gatherings are definitely among them. It will be very interesting to create our own virtual space and have other people join in whenever they are connected to the internet. It sounds a bit like the story of Ready Player One, to say the least.
Making this concept become a reality will be quite challenging. Right now, there is no easy way to create a virtual space and keep it active at all times. Granted, users have their “home area” in virtual reality THe bigger question is whether or not we should be able to modify other people’s shared world or not.
Redecorating someone’s virtual room, for example, could have some interesting consequences. For now, shared worlds remain nothing but a very distant dream. However, technology allows us to realize even our wildest dreams, given enough time. It is only a matter of years until shared worlds become a trend in virtual reality.
Whether or not it will be beneficial to social interaction as a whole, remains to be seen. The thought of dropping by a friend in VR and hanging out together is very appealing, though. It is possible such technological innovation will get more people excited about VR as well. Right now, there is no apparent reason to buy a VR headset unless you really want to game in virtual reality.
