Even though things aren’t looking great for the VR industry, there is reason to remain excited. Pixar, the well-known animation studio, has finally made its virtual reality debut. They do so with Coco VR, which will be available to Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR owners come November 2017. This is a companion experience for the studio’s upcoming Day of the Dead animated feature premiering next month.

Pixar Brings Coco to VR Headsets Near you

It is good to see more types of content become available for VR headset owners. Although Pixar’s Coco is limited to the Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear VR for now, the firm’s first venture into virtual reality should not be overlooked either. As one would expect, this new experience is designed to promote the studio’s upcoming animation movie, which is themed around the Day of the Dead. Cross-platform promotion can be a smart move and virtual reality is the platform to do it on.

In Coco VR, users will experience the story of Coco. Unlike most other companion experiences we have seen so far, this creation will integrate social features to let people experience it together regardless of their location. An interesting concept, as the mix of social and virtual reality remains a bit lackluster right now. Efforts like this may very well end up highlighting the benefits of exploring the options in this regard.

Coco VR will be coming to the Oculus Rift on November 15th. Samsung Gear VR owners will have to wait one week longer, although it is unclear why that is the case. This latter date coincides with the release of Coco in the movie theatres, though, which may explain a thing or two. Whether or not this experience will boost ticket sales for the movie, remains to be seen. Animated movies always do well, especially if Pixar is behind them in one way or another.

Moreover, the experience will get an official “Disney preview” at various Dia de los Muertos festivities across the United States. There is also a plan on the table to bring Coco VR to select stores and theatres, although no specific information has been revealed yet. It is evident the Oculus Rift will get a lot more of these experiences and games in the coming months and years. The future is looking somewhat bright for VR, although there is still a lot of work to be done.
