VR enthusiasts all over the world are looking forward to standalone VR headsets. Oculus may be the first to come to market in this regard. More specifically, their Oculus Go headset may become accessible as early as May of 2018. That would certainly be an intriguing development, and a date to mark on everyone’s calendar as well.

The Oculus Go Release Date

As is usually the case in the world of technology, any product release date needs to be taken with a grain of salt. While Oculus has hinted at releasing their Oculus Go headset before the Summer, it remains to be seen if that can be achieved. In a new update, the company claims they will have a working unit to showcase during Facebook’s F8 developer conference in May of this year. It is expected the unit will become available for purchase on this day as well.

Assuming this date is achievable, things will get very interesting in the VR industry. The first generation of major headsets has been received with mixed feelings. While the hardware is certainly powerful, the tethered connection to a computer is a major drawback. Players dislike the feeling of cables around their body, let alone getting tangled up in them.

Whether or not standalone VR headsets will alleviate most of these concerns, remains to be seen. Until the first units come to market, there is no indication this will be an overall improvement for enthusiasts around the world. At the same time, Facebook has been pushing hard to elevate virtual reality to a whole new level. Revealing the Oculus Go at the May conference would certainly be a step in the right direction.

For the time being, we will have to wait and see how all of this plays out. Ever since the Oculus Go was announced in October of 2017, there has been little to no further news. For now, there is still no price point for this new unit, let alone whether or not there will be multiple versions of this headset moving forward. It is an interesting deadline to keep an eye on, assuming Facebook won’t disappoint the masses [again].
