Disney has shown a keen interest in virtual reality technology as of late. The company is now looking at a way to turn text-based language scripts into VR content. More specifically, it is possible to bring stories to life in virtual reality. While it is not ready for filmmaking by any means, it is one of the potential outcomes to look forward to.

Disney Taps Into a new VR Market

It has to be said, Disney has been going down a rather interesting path when it comes to virtual reality technology. With the support of such a major company, this industry can continue to thrive for some time to come. Their latest venture is a very peculiar one, although a project that holds a lot of promise as well. More specifically, their new project can effectively bring natural language scripts to life with pre-visualizations. It is not a go-to solution for creating films, but that situation may come to change in the future.

As one would expect, pre-visualizations are commonly used in the filmmaking industry as rough draft animations. It goes directors an idea of how their characters behave in a specific environment. Moreover, it will also provide a more viable approach to how one should envision major changes to the script itself. At the same time, one has to acknowledge this technology usually revolves around a very lengthy process, as some films take several years until the story is finalized.

Turning scripts into storyboards through virtual reality will hopefully speed up this significant process. While achieving real-time conversion speed will be a challenge, Disney seems confident their approach will certainly move things along in the near future. Known as Project Cardinal this new software should certainly be interesting to keep an eye on as a filmmaker. It is even possible to incorporate voice recordings and preview scenes through a VR headset.

For the time being, the application is being tested by a handful of people. It is unclear if the app will come to the open market later this year, but it will heavily depend on what type of feedback the current group of testers provides. It is evident Disney want to tackle bigger projects with Cardinal in the future, but there is no official development timeline in this regard.
