Virtual reality experiences come in many different shapes and forms. Most of these experiences are designed to convey a message first and foremost. To mark the 70th anniversary of UN peacekeeping, a VR film has been created. Known as Under the Blue Helmet, it will put people in the position of said peacekeepers by using virtual reality technology.
Under the Blue Helmet is Intriguing
It is good to see so many entities embrace the concept of VR technology. Storytelling is transformed when using innovative technologies. As such, it seems to be a matter of time until virtual and augmented reality begin making a bigger impact in this industry as a whole.
For the United Nations, now is the time to experiment with VR. Their new film, called Under the Blue Helmet, is designed as a lengthy VR experience. It puts viewers into the boots of uniformed and civilian peacekeepers active in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
While this experience sounds very “walking simulator”-like, the reality is very different. Viewers will witness patrol routes, reintegration of former fights into society, and the protection duty of the local population. It is a very vivid tale of important tasks which will most likely never make any mainstream headlines.
It is good to see the UN pay close attention to these new technologies. There are vital stories to be told, and the VR medium lends itself perfectly to doing exactly that. The UN peacekeepers put their lives on the line every single day. It is important their message is heard loud and clear all over the world.
