Retailers are showing an increasing interest in experimenting with virtual reality technology. In Japan, a company known as team S is offering a system which lets users buy products at stores without visiting the physical location. This service will be commercialized by 2020 at the latest.

Revamping In-store Shopping With Virtual Reality

The retail shopping experience is not always pleasant for most mainstream consumers. A lot of things can be improved upon, although it is impossible for retailers to please everyone. Team S, a Japanese firm, is removing the needs for consumers to effectively visit the store in person. Through their new system, VR shopping can be taken to a whole new level.

The company prides itself on letting consumers virtually drop in at shops and buy the goods they are looking for. This is made possible thanks to a combination of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and 5G connectivity. it is evident proper mobile data connectivity is a requirement, as this shopping experience heralds a completely different way of shopping altogether. Creating the next-generation online shopping platform is not an easy challenge.

Through this new VR experience, consumers can see images of the inside of a shop they want to visit. These images are live-streamed over the internet to create a sense of immersion. Having the feeling of being around other shoppers without physically being present is rather intriguing. Clients can then verbally order goods from a shop employee and even have items delivered at their doorstep. Retailers can also launch online shops without the need for a website.

The first real-world trial of this new VR shopping experience will be conducted this week. Various shops in the Ishikawa and Kagoshima Prefecture swill participate in the pilot project. Getting more stores on board for this particular VR experience will remain a big challenge. It requires the installation of additional cameras inside of shops. Not every physical shopper or store owner will be comfortable with that idea.
