It was only a matter of time until Google Earth received a major upgrade. Very few people anticipated this update would revolve around adding VR capabilities to the popular app, though. As part of this new feature, users can now visit any address in the world by using a VR headset. An interesting development that will help put virtual reality on the radar of consumers worldwide.

Experiencing Google Earth in Virtual Reality

For the longest time, consumers have used Google Earth to look up addresses and important buildings. However, the experience has always been a bit disappointing, since there was no real sense of immersion when looking up a specific location. All of that has come to change, thanks to the implementation of a new VR feature within Google Earth itself.

To be more specific, users can enter any address or location they want. Once they do so, they will “fly over the location in 3D” while enjoying a virtual reality view of the destination. That is quite an interesting concept, to say the least. Moreover, it appears this experience is pretty snappy, which is good to see. After all, no one likes to wait around seconds or even minutes when looking up a specific location through Google Earth.

Moreover, Google also introduced over two dozen “noteworthy” locations to visit in a virtual reality environment. These locations include Table Mountain, the Perito Moreno Glacier, and the Neuschwanstein Castle, which movie buffs will remember as the setting for Sleeping Beauty. All of these locations can now be accessed with relative ease through the Google Earth VR feature, which is quite nifty.

It has to be said, bringing virtual reality to Google Earth is quite an intriguing development. Rather than just standing in front of a house or seeing a limited space around it, VR users can now see landscapes and cities in full. In fact, they may experience a sensation of “flying” while zipping between locations. Moreover, it will allow Google Earth users to discover new locations they are not aware of. All things considered, this update creates a far more immersive experience, which is only a good thing.
