NASA continues to pay a lot of attention to virtual reality technology. its latest applications can propel viewers into space. The new selfie and VR apps will put users in a virtual spacesuit and offer a wide variety of exotic cosmic locations to check out. It is another example of how virtual reality can offer some light entertainment to owners of VR headsets.
Another VR Move by NASA
One has to commend NASA for trying to bring innovative technologies to the masses. Overall interest in virtual reality remains relatively low, although the space agency is trying to change that situation. By unveiling two new applications, NASA confirms they still see a lot of merit in VR, at least for educational and entertainment purposes.
Through this new selfie application, users can take a selfie, paste it into a virtual spacesuit, and set a planet as the background. With over two dozen locations to choose from, this will undoubtedly lead to some hilarious situations across social media. Every photo taken will also share a bit of information about the image background itself.
The other VR app transports owners of the HTC Vive – and soon Oculus – headsets to space itself. Five different earth-sized planets can be explored. One has to keep in mind this second app features artistic impressions of what the planets may look like. Observing them with current technology is nigh impossible, and a lot of blanks need to be filled in accordingly.
It is evident these applications are not for everyone. That is only normal, although they can still offer some entertainment to thousands of people. Especially the option to explore space in virtual reality should be given a fair chance, as it is the closest most of us will ever get to space. There is something mysterious about the frontier beyond the stars, and VR can bring it all to life.
