Sony maintains a dominant position in the VR headset industry. The company’s PlayStation VR unit has sold millions of copies and continues to remain attractive to games. At the same time, rumors are swelling as to how the company is working on a successor. The PSVR2 may be coming to market in the near future.

Sony’s Plans for VR Remain Unclear

To date, it has always been rather unclear as to what Sony expects from the virtual reality industry. Their current PS VR headset is of great interest, and the price is more than affordable. At the same time, its competitors are releasing their second- and third-generation units, whereas Sony has not made any significant changes to their hardware.

A technology giant such as Sony cannot afford to be behind the curve in this regard. It would appear the company is working on new ventures within the VR gaming world. Their first priority is to develop better games which can be engaged with for a longer period of time. That is something everyone who likes VR has been asking for, although no significant changes have come to fruition just yet.

Additionally, it would appear Sony is contemplating a second-generation PS VR headset. This launch may very well coincide with the PlayStation 5 release, which is expected in late 2019 or early 2020. Nothing has been confirmed so far by Sony, although there is no official indication the company is not working on improvements for the PlayStation VR headset.

Given the significance of the year 2020 for the VR industry – according to analysts – Sony may very well surprise the world when that year comes around. For now, the company’s PS VR is still in high demand, and its platform offers the most complete virtual reality games to enjoy at home. Depending on how the industry evolves as a whole, the Japanese tech giant may decide to beef up its hardware offerings accordingly.
