Various chains and brands are currently in the process of enabling VR exposure in different ways. Macy’s is one of the bigger companies effectively exploring such options, although it is not a global effort by any means. Several stores across the US are now rolling out this technology to attract more customers.

Macy’s Has High Hopes for Virtual Reality

For in-store purchases, virtual reality can be an interesting option to look into. Getting customers more excited about buying things is always a bonus. Macy’s stores across the US are in the process of offering their customers VR capabilities to let them experience how furniture would look in a room. There is a big difference between a couch in a store and in an actual home.

It is not the first time the company is looking into VR. An initial trial was conducted across stores in New York, Florida, and New Jersey. After this demo proved relatively successful, the VR shopping experience made its way to roughly six dozen locations. Another 20 locations will be added by January of 2019.

This new technology is designed specifically for in-store Macy’s customers. They will use a tablet to map the dimensions of their living room. They can then select items from Macy’s catalog and put them inside the virtual room. This provides a better insight as to how these couches and cupboards would look when inside a comparable space.

So far, it seems this particular approach helps boost overall furniture sales by over 50%. That is a pretty interesting development. Especially when considering how consumers seem averse to virtual reality technology first and foremost. Even so, projects like these can help bring virtual reality into the mainstream moving forward.
