There are many things one can do with and in virtual reality. For educational purposes, this technology may be one of the greatest tools to date. The Rome Reborn tour is just one example of how ancient history can be brought to life in the modern age. It is the first venture of its kind which can have major long-term implications.
The Rome Reborn Tour in Virtual Reality
Many aspects of Ancient Rome have been lost to our society forever. That is extremely unfortunate, as most of these buildings and other structures cannot be recreated that easily. Thankfully, virtual reality technology can help improve upon this process. A collaboration between Flyzone Productions and Rome Reborn Virtual Reality Project aims to bring ancient history back to life in VR.
Users can gaze upon the spectacle that once was ancient Rome. More importantly, one doesn’t even have to travel to Rome in the flesh to do so which make this experience all the more appealing. The VR project displays over 7,000 buildings and monuments to be admired in VR. Additionally, the layout of Ancient Rome spans five and a half square miles, which gives users plenty of things to experience.
Project director Bernard Fischer adds:
“I first came up with the idea in 1974. I was determined to find a way to bring these wonderful monuments to the world, but the technology didn’t exist then. We had to redesign the model 3 times as technology advanced, but 22 years after we began, and 3 million dollars later, we’re finally here.”
At this time, it is only possible to explore two sites. Both the Roman forum and Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine are available for in-depth viewing. The rest of Ancient Rome can be explored through a “fly-over”, although it is expected further improvements will be made. The team currently explores options to let users visit the Colosseum and the Pantheon. This VR experience will constantly grow and evolve as more time progresses.
