It has been coming for some time now, but Nintendo has launched its first VR product. An $80 cardboard headset for the Nintendo Switch has been introduced late last week. It is a gaming accessory which is part of the Labo Line. It is also the first time Nintendo explores VR options since its Virtual Boy’s introduction nearly 25 years ago.
Nintendo Switch and VR is an Interesting Mix
One has to commend Nintendo for exploring an industry which doesn’t seem to captivate a big audience. Although the Nintendo Switch is a big success for the company, pairing it with a cardboard VR headset will always remain a risk. One surprising aspect is the price of this new gadget. It will cost $80, which is rather steep for a cardboard box which attaches to a Switch. However, there is a bit more to this unit than meets the eye at first.
While many people will compare it to Google’s Cardboard, the purpose a bit different. Since this cardboard unit is designed to work with a console, rather than a smartphone, its design is a bit different. Additionally, it is part of the Labo line of products, which usually do not come at the lowest of prices. Moreover, this unit seemingly has no straps attached to it, which means users will need to hold up the gadget and the Switch tot heir eyes. Not necessarily the most comfortable option.
Although the cardboard VR headset is interesting, users will need to be patient. It is expected this new gadget will come to market on April 12. So far, it has not been confirmed if this will be a global or isolated release for specific markets. Nintendo is confident this product will appeal to both children and adults alike. The price tag of $80 may prove to be a big hurdle in that regard, as it is a pretty hefty investment. However, it is also well cheaper than the PlayStation VR or any of the high-end PC headsets.
Nintendo Labo products are designed to make technology more accessible. In the case of virtual reality, the support of Nintendo can prove to be crucial in terms of future growth. Whether or not this new gadget can boost Switch sales again, remains to be seen. The gaming giant recently confirmed Switch sales are on the decline, forcing them to cut its sales guidance.
