It appears some more details have come to light regarding the standalone VR headsets Google promised the world. HTC will release their device as part of the Vive family, even though it does not require a phone or computer to operate. This improves the overall use and portability factor by a staggering amount, to say the least. However, the device will run Daydream, which means there will be some form of the Android software installed on it.

New Standalone HTC Vive With Daydream

It is quite interesting to note the new standalone VR headset by HTC will be part of the Vive family. One would assume they would choose a different name, as the Vive is a PC-powered VR headset for enthusiasts. Since this Daydream-capable device does not require a PC or a phone, it could cause some confusion among newcomers for sure. Then again, HTC Vive has become a rather strong brand in the virtual reality world already.

Do keep in mind there are still a lot of unanswered questions regarding the standalone headsets, though it is doubtful these devices will provide a powerful and immersive VR experience. Moreover, their price point remains unknown, although it may not necessarily be cheaper compared to the current HTC Vive. If that were to be the case, consumers will expect a powerful HMD, although it is doubtful the devices will deliver on that promise.

Then again, it is doubtful Google plans to compete with desktop VR anytime soon. It is evident the company feels mobile VR is an important industry right now. Making significant improvements in this regard could be a positive development in the long run. Additionally, this new HTC Vive headset will not suffer from thermal throttling like most mobile VR headsets do. That is, based on the information we have at this time.

Until we know the full specifications of this device, it remains to be seen what we can expect. There is some initial excitement regarding this new HTC Vive headset for sure. However, it remains to be seen if Daydream headsets have any chance of success. Not being obstructed by cables will be a great change, though.
