Bringing virtual reality to the masses will be a big challenge. Even though a lot of developers focus on gaming right now, there are plenty of opportunities waiting to be explored. Augmented reality and virtual reality will certainly have some overlap in this regard, that much is evident. Below are some opportunities for both technologies to shine in the coming years.

3. Moving Beyond Gaming

While it sounds pretty interesting to use virtual reality for gaming purposes, most consumers want nothing to do with it. Not everyone enjoys video games, and they will most certainly not buy VR hardware to play games all of a sudden. The same applies to augmented reality, even though popular games such as Pokemon Go show there is a clear market for such projects. Now is the time to look well beyond gaming. The entertainment sector is one example of how VR and AR can be put on the map over the coming years.

2. Custom Enterprise Content

Rest assured a lot of companies are looking at virtual and augmented reality technology right now. To be more precise, enterprises are looking at ways to design custom content over the next few years. This will mainly be done from a knowledge-sharing perspective. Think of virtual classrooms, property development, or any other use cases that may benefit from either virtual or augmented reality.

1. HUDs in Automotive

Although this latter aspect is more augmented reality-oriented, heads-up displays will become more apparent in the automobile sector moving forward. Smartphone-base HUD technology will provide drivers with relevant information and telematics. It will be interesting to see how such HUDs may eventually integrate with self-driving vehicles as well. It is equally possible virtual reality may make an impact in the automotive sector as well. Should that happen, it will be mainly in the form of simulators, such as driving lessons and exams.
