Technology enthusiasts have labeled virtual reality under many different names ranging from immersive technology to a game changer and a flavor of the month One synonym rarely associated with VR is how the technology serves as an empathy machine, even though that is what this technology does best in any case. The bigger question is what makes virtual reality an empathy machine in the first place.
VR Leaves No One Untouched
When entering the virtual reality for the first or the 500th time, the experience will always invoke a sense of empathy. This is why some industry experts refer to VR as an empathy machine, simply because the content and experience successfully engage viewers at a higher level. It is impossible to compare virtual reality with watching tv, going to the movies, or any other consumer-grade experience we access today.
Immersive is an adjective often used when discussing virtual reality technology. Users are “transported” to a virtual space where they are safe from harm and can be creative in any way imaginable. At the same time, this is what establishes the empathic feeling players receive every time they enter virtual reality. It is engaging from the first second to the last, and hardly ever disappoints. Regardless of what we do in VR, it is such a drastic change compared to our daily lives, it is not surprising some people suffer from avaddiction.
Moreover, virtual reality gives users a chance to dictate perspective and interact with traditional and unique content in a far more engaging manner. This also creates a sense of empathy, as it opens an entirely new perspective for consumers and technology enthusiasts alike. There is no experience like it when relying on traditional technology and media, even though some of us are prone to getting addicted to these types of content consumption as well.
Any type of technology that engages the user at a whole new level will be labeled as an empathy machine. Virtual reality is one of the first technologies to successfully do so in a manner the world had not experienced before. Content creators of all types will need to take advantage of this empathy machine sooner rather than later. Having your content resonate with users is invaluable, that much is certain.
