There are quite a few intriguing developments to take note of when it comes to “alternative” reality experiences. The Leap Motion Interaction Engine received a massive update. It now includes an interface designer, graphic rendered, and support for PC handheld controllers. These are all great additions to an engine which has yet to unlock its full potential. Rest assured developers will gladly test these new toys.

A Big Update for the Leap Motion Interactive Engine

It is evident the Leap Motion will shake things up quite a bit. Interacting with the digital world has always been rather clunky. Despite some major progress made in virtual reality, the experience is still woefully incomplete. The Leap Motion may be able to fill in a lot of the blanks moving forward. Its Interaction Engine has been in early access beta since 2016, and offers some appealing feature, to say the least.

That list of features has now been expanded upon. By offering an interface designer, graphic renderer, and handheld controller support the Interaction Engine in on the right track. It will still take some time before the Leap motion will come to market, though. The Interaction Engine will give developers an overview of how the ecosystem works and what it is capable of.

With these new major improvements, the opportunities for interacting with the digital world become more apparent. Rest assured there is still a lot of work to be done, though. More importantly, this update also improves cross-platform developer workflows. The additional of support for PC handheld controllers is incredibly significant in this regard. Anyone developing content for the Oculus or Vive controllers can take advantage of the updated Interaction Engine as well.

It is evident it is only a matter of time until virtual reality content picks up in quality and quantity. Whether or not that will be due to the Leap Motion itself, remains to be seen. Upgrades like these should always be met with a lot of excitement, that much is certain. The coming few years will be quite interesting for virtual reality, that much no one can deny. It will be interesting to see what people will develop using the updated Leap Motion Interaction Engine.
