When it comes to virtual reality, space adventure games are not that hard to come by. Unfortunately, there is a very mixed bag of games at one’s disposal right now. Detached, a game which has only been around for a few months now is not getting much praise from other game critics. It is not the most exciting game, but it is not all that bad either.
Detached Doesn’t Hit The Sweet Spot
The gameplay of a VR game will either satisfy you or leave you wanting more. In the case of Detached, there is a bit of both, although that doesn’t make it a must-buy by any means. The single player campaign offers space exploration with puzzle elements. Those always score well in our book, although they are not without quirks. Moreover, the navigation aspect leaves users hanging a bit, as the in-game design is often very bland at best.
The puzzles themselves are pretty simple, yet engaging enough to keep us entertained for a bit. Some puzzles require you to complete time trials, which are always a bit challenging. However, the in-game zero-g maneuvering isn’t always your best friend, and frustration can certainly become part of the experience. In fact, we would advise users to play with a gamepad rather than regular motion controllers to avoid any unnecessary anger management issues.
Sadly, you are pretty much done with the Detached single player campaign after 60-90 minutes, with no reason to ever go through it again. The multiplayer mode is not all that great either, as very few people will pick up this game for that particular purpose. It is more fun due to an added degree of challenge, but the number of maps and available modes are still lacking. Plus, random matchmaking will cause a fair bit of issues for new players meeting experienced Detached users who will destroy them in about a minute.
All things considered, Detached is not a horrible game, but it is evident it fails to maximize its potential as well. There are a lot of things which could – and perhaps should- have been done differently. Although it is available on the Steam Store, it is not something we would advise spending money on until it becomes a lot cheaper during a sale. If the developers can introduce some changes and make the game more appealing in multiplayer, it is certainly worth the price.
