Some VR games have been around for some time without having an actual virtual reality component. Fruit Ninja is by far one of the most recognizable brands in all of gaming. It originally started as a mobile game for phones and tablets, but is now also a reality VR experience. Contrary to what some people would expect, it is quite a blast, to say the least.
Fruit Ninja VR is as fun as You’d Expect
Anyone who has ever played Fruit Ninja will acknowledge it is a simple game, but one which poses quite the challenge The objective is pretty simple, as you need to slice fruit into as many pieces as possible. At the same time, you need to avoid hitting the bombs, as they will reduce your playing time accordingly. It is a simple concept to execute, but one that is very, very difficult to master successfully.
When we got our hands on the VR version, we weren’t too convinced this game concept would work out accordingly. Much to our surprise, we quickly turned into controller-wielding ninjas demolishing fruit left, right, and center. Although we played the game on PlayStation VR, it is safe to assume the experience will be quite similar on either the HTC Vive or Oculus Rift. Moreover, the VR version is approachable to players of all ages, rather than making them squint their eyes at a very small screen.
The game is made better than its mobile version because of how the sword wielding is handled. Players can use both edges of the blade to smash fruit, whereas the broad side is used to knock bombs out of the way. Although this latter feature is quite frustrating to learn, it pays off in spades once you learn how to use it effectively. The Move controllers absolutely shine when playing games like these, that much is evident.
If we have to criticize the game, for something, it is how the number of game modes remains exactly the same. There is no additional competitive edge compared to other versions of Fruit Ninja, although that isn’t a big problem. Especially when considering how the game costs US$15 unless discounted, there is no reason not to pick it up. Smooth gameplay mixed with proper physics and enjoyable controls are a tough combination to find in the virtual reality world. Fruit Ninja is on point in all departments.
