With a name like “The Tower”, the virtual reality game in question could go in many different directions. Headroom.one decided to create a game for the Oculus Rift which has only received very few mentions so far. As the name suggests, players will move around a tower through a conveyer belt system. You will need to dodge obstacles to reach the top. It sounds pretty simple, but rest assured there’s nothing simple about this game.
The Tower is More Challenging Than It Seems
It is good to see VR game developers use a simple concept and turn it something incredibly difficult to master. Although reaching the top of the build in The Tower may not seem difficult at first, there is a fair bit of challenge involved You need to minimize the amount of times you die – and you will do so a fair few times early on. There is a sprint function to cheat a bit, but you shouldn’t rely on that trick all too much either. With those things in mind, you will have your work cut out, to say the least.
With a minimalist art style and simple textures, The Tower is not a beautiful game. It’s not boring either, though, as you ascend over the escalator will result in some nice vistas to explore. It doesn’t require a beefy PC to run either, which is something a lot of Oculus Rift owners will be pleased about. That said, frame drops may occur on any style, which is something future patches should be able to resolve easily. However, an unfortunate frame drop may result in an unfortunate death, which can be a bit frustrating at times.
One thing about The Tower we really appreciate is how it supports both room scale and standing gameplay. However, in our opinion, room scale works a lot better to move around in, assuming you have the space. The obstacles along your path are sometimes rather large and wide and requires significant movement to avoid. There are also traps on the escalator which only make things more hectic and fun. Unless you can move around freely, those can’t be avoided by any means, though. Every playthrough takes around 40 minutes to complete, yet the game has a lot of replay value if you’re competitive in nature.
It is one of the more enjoyable games we have played this year, especially for the price of $4.99. There is no reason not to pick this game up as it is an enjoyable experience all the way through. It is also a great way to exercise a bit, if you are into that sort of thing. Most players will play this game quite a few times in an effort to continuously beat their previous high score. It can also be a great party game if you have friends over. Definitely worth picking up and playing.
