Crashimals Review – Good Game Design but Flawed Controls

VR game developers are somewhat keen on putting animals in all kinds of odd situations. Crashimals is yet another VR game that has a lot of potential, yet suffers from very poor execution by the developers. It isn’t exactly like your Angry Birds games on mobile, although there are certain similarities to be found. This game is developed for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, although both platforms suffer from odd controls.

Crashimals Could Have Been so Much More

The goal of Crashimals is to fling animals into rickety buildings ready to collapse. If this concept sounds familiar, it probably is, as we have seen it in dozens of games over the past few years. You will not be destroying pigs in this game, though, but rather cakes. A waste of food in our opinion, but it is how the developers want players to handle things. There are a lot of different animals waiting to be encountered, ranging from badgers to giraffes and everything in between.

Throughout the course of Crashimals, you will unlock new pilots and different kinds of bombs. All of these new characters and tools require their own approach to be used effectively. Do keep in mind not all characters are suited for every type of mission, though. For a single-player game, one would expect this game to get boring quite quickly. Instead, the developers introduce 72 levels across four different areas. The cartoonish look and feel of the game is a big plus in our book, although it is understandable not everyone will be a big fan.

Even though there is nothing to complain about the game so far, the issues arise once you actually start playing the game. The controls of this game are very odd, to say the least. In fact, they are downright frustrating more often than not, which certainly takes away some of the fun. You will need to wield both controllers of your HTC Vive or Oculus Rift, which isn’t necessarily cumbersome. However, they require very precise movements, which border on nitpicky movements more often than not. Even flying in the game is pretty tricky as bombs require perfect placement on multiple occasions.

Crashimals is an intriguing game by all means. It is worth picking up if you are into Angry Birds-esque gameplay in one way or another. However, you will need to contend with some very odd controls and stomach replaying some levels multiple times to finally get things done right. This does improve the longevity of this game a bit, but not necessarily in the right way. If these controls can somehow be modified, the game is a solid experience. Right now, frustration is part of playing this game, which isn’t a positive trait.
