Any virtual reality game that promises both aliens and pirates is something worth checking out. From Other Suns immediately appealed to us in this regard, especially because it adds ship-to-ship combat and a great amount of FPS action.The game recently had an open beta weekend which left us excited to see more. Unfortunately, the steep price tag of $39.99 will not make owners of the Oculus Rift all too happy. Nor is it worth that amount of money either.
From Other Suns is a Mixed bag
No one can disagree a VR game that offers both singleplayer and multiplayer content will have a good run in the end. In the case of From Other Suns, that may be slightly different, though. While the single player concept is pretty decent, its main focus is on multiplayer combat. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen how long this community will remain in place, as there is a big chance the numbers will drop off pretty quickly. It all remains to be seen how the general population responds to what From Other Suns has to offer.
It quickly becomes evident From Other Suns is a very different game in a space setting. Your goal is to captain a spaceship and return a newly discovered technology to Earth. That is easier said than done, as hostile aliens are on your tail and they are out for blood. While you can perform hyper jumps through space, every jump has a new procedurally generated outcome. Aliens, space pirates, crazy robots, and anything else that comes to mind are just a few options of what you might run into. There is a lot of fighting to do, and one needs to be prepared for battle at all times.
There are other things besides fighting which pose a threat. Running out of fuel, for example, will happen more than once. You can summon a trader, assuming you have something of value to give in return. Ships can be upgraded in many different ways and also need maintaining by the crew. As if that isn’t enough, there will be plenty of ship-to-ship boarding as well, which will damage your ship even further over time. There is a lot to do at every given moment, yet it sometimes feels a bit hectic to keep track of everything. Thankfully, the controls in this game are pretty simple, as you can use either free movement or a teleport-like system.
Graphically, one would expect some great visuals in From other Suns. Sadly, the game disappoints quite a bit in this regard.Audio isn’t all that great either, but it does the job just fine for the most part. The single player campaign can be completed with relative ease and in quick succession. If you have friends to play with, there is a lot more to do in this game, though. Plus, the multiplayer aspect is worth checking out as well. For the price of $39.99, there is a very bare-bones singleplayer experience. Without friends to play with, there is no reason to pick up the game whatsoever.
