Dexed Review – Nothing Spectacular but Good for Short Gaming Bursts

As an owner of the PlayStation VR headset, there is no shortage of games which have sort of appeal. Dexed is a title which drew our attention despite not being like most games we have reviewed in recent weeks. Sometimes, it is good to go out of your way and enjoy a completely different experience. While the game is relaxing, it is also borderline boring and bland. The game is available for the price of $9.99.

Dexed is a bit too Relaxing

The trailer of Dexed was enough to get us excited about this game at first. Knowing it is developed by Ninja Theory was an added bonus. With the price of tag of under $10, it was well worth giving it a fair shot. For an on-rails shooter, we had expected a lot more, though. While you need to cycle between different elemental attacks, the whole experience becomes pretty repetitive incredibly fast. That can’t have been the goal of the developers, but it is the situation we find ourselves in.

There are two different elements to use. Ice enemies take fire damage and fire enemies take ice damage. It is not a complicated or hi-tech concept, and overall makes for a good experience. Unfortunately, there is no real improvement upon these concepts, while the enemies show a small degree of variation. There is also a shield to block incoming projectile, but other than that, the game has nothing extra to offer. A missed opportunity, as Dexed seemed a lot more interesting in the trailer.

With just four levels to choose from, there isn’t that much variation either. The game worlds include an ocean, lava, snow, and a forest. Nothing we haven’t seen in other games in the same genre either. Everything else about this game feels pretty slow-paced, whereas we would have liked more frantic action. This is an on-rails VR shooter after all. Dexed also has one boss battle which is perhaps even more boring than the rest of the game.  It is difficult to believe competent developers put this miserable game together.

While nothing about Dexed is exceptionally bad, it just feels like a “been there, did that, got the T-shirt” kind of game. There is nothing really exciting about the gameplay and virtually zero replay value. For the price, it gives sufficient content, and the VR elements are done exceptionally well. It has one of the more reliable tracking systems we have seen in VR so far. Sadly, it’s not a game most people will pick up again after finishing it.
