Discovery Review – A Decent Minecraft Clone for PS VR

One of the more interesting aspects of gaming in virtual reality is how you can discover and explore new game worlds. In the game titled Discover, that is your main objective. The game is available on the PS VR and costs $11.99. This game is clearly a social experiment on a different level, yet it is evident there is still room for future improvements.

Discovery is an Interesting Spin on Minecraft

One thing that becomes evident almost immediately is how Discovery looks and feels like a VR version of Minecraft or Trove. The layout of the game, as well as the interface and objectives, almost look and feel identical. At the same time, this concept works extremely well when it comes to open game worlds, especially in virtual reality.  The graphic design may not be to everyone’s liking, though, but that is only to be expected from games like these.

In Discovery, you can move around using the DualShock 4 controller, which works really well. You even see the controller in VR and the buttons are associated with certain actions visible on the screen. All of this feels pretty natural, which makes for a great gaming experience, all things considered. There is also an option for “free walking”, but it just feels too slow for our liking. Last but not least, one can use click turning, but that option feels perhaps least natural of them all.

As one would expect from this type of game, you can build and destroy anything and everything. There is also an option to fly, which gives you different views of the game world. There is no real story or ending to the game whatsoever,  which means there is an unlimited amount of playtime to be had. That is, assuming you are inclined to build things in a virtual world. You can also enjoy an online co-op mode with up to three other players at once. It is an interesting addition, but it all feels somewhat limited in nature.

Although there are plenty of reasons to like Discovery, it’s not a game for everyone. Players who dislike the concept of Minecraft or similar games like it will probably dislike Discovery as well. The creative minds among VR players will have a great time exploring all of the options and honing their building skills. With no set goal other than the one you set yourself, it is hard to like this game if you only enjoy games with a purpose and narrative.
