Detached Review – A Mixed bag of Great Ideas and Poor Execution

It is not easy to turn a unique idea into a fun and playable VR game. Detached is one of those games with a lot of promise and a very unique atmosphere, but it ultimate doesn’t deliver on the promise. There are a lot of movements involved in this game, which may or may not incur simulator sickness. Anshar Studios has taken a gamble with this game and most people will not be overly impressed by it, unfortunately. It doesn’t utilize its full potential, though, that much is evident. The game is available for both HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Detached has a lot of Promise but Falls Short

Before we delve deeper into the game people who get queasy when experiencing virtual reality should pass up on Detached. This is not to discriminate the game, but it is the harsh reality as far as this game is concerned. The game is a player vs player battlefield all the way and uses 360-degree space exploration at players from day one. There is also a  single player component to get used to some of the controls and experiences, but most people will never finish it if they suffer from simulator sickness. It is an absolute thrill for those who can stomach this feeling, although that doesn’t make Detached a perfect game either.

Having such a high-intensive game is both fun and terrifying at the same time. Engaging space combat is something most people want to experience in VR. However, it is not those with a weak stomach, despite the different control options to reduce queasiness accordingly. Full throttle movement is a blast to try, but we wouldn’t recommend it if you just ate by any means. The game looks and feels as if you are genuinely piloting a spaceship and battling enemies, which is something the developers deserve a lot of praise for. However, they may have overdone it a bit, depending on how well you can stomach the movements and action.

The audio in Detached is also of high quality and actively contributes to the game without getting overwhelming. While playing the single player campaign, players may feel like they have visited specific areas before. That is one of the flaws in Detached, as there is not to much variation when visiting different areas. At the same time, On the other hand, players can gaze at the stars and space around them while traversing between zones. It is a bit of a mixed bag, but overall, it gets the job done.

Last but not least, there is no real enemy in this game. In fact, it appears your main culprit is the oxygen level and fuel level. This is a bit different when playing in PVp, though, as two players play against one another in a capture the flag style game mode. This is great fun, assuming you can find a person to play against in the first place. Additionally, online content is limited in terms of maps, as there are only two available right now. All things considered, Detached is a mixed bag of great ideas an graphics mixed with bland areas and a lack of content. Plus, the motion sickness aspect will turn off  a lot of players as well.
