Budget gaming titles for the virtual reality ecosystem are often hit and miss. In most cases, the game in question is worth playing once or twice before leaving it to collect dust. Duckpocalypse is not necessarily a title everyone will like, but it does provide a cheerful retro-style duck hunting experience on the Samsung Gear VR, HTC Vive, and Oculus Rift. Replaying the game is not necessarily the objective of this game, though.
Duckpocalypse is Oddly Satisfying Despite its Single Game Mode
When spending $2.49 for a game on Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, the player will have to make some concessions in terms of expectations. For such a price, you will not see high-pixel graphics or a game that is designed to play more than twice. Duckpocalypse falls into this category, but it seems the developers did that on purpose. More specifically, this cheap game is quite fun while it lasts, and brings back memories of the good old DUck Hunt game. It is still worth picking up even if you play it on and off for 15 minutes at a time.
As the name suggests, Duckpocalypse is anything but a complicated game. Your objective is to shoot as many ducks as possible while racking up a new high score. To do so, you are allowed to dual wield weapons, which makes for a rather enjoyable experience overall. Do keep in mind there is a time limit to contend with, which makes this game a fair bit more challenging than most people would expect it to be. This type of game seems to be designed for virtual reality, even though it may not necessarily be to everyone’s liking at first.
One thing to keep in mind is how this game can be played solo or with friends. As arcade-style shooters often tend to bring out a high degree of competition among friends, Duckpocalypse is well worth picking up in that regard. Although the game mode never changes and there will no additional content to enjoy in the future, this game is a lot of fun. The one level you will need to fight through will keep a lot of players engaged for some time, even if it is just to let off some steam after a long day.
Surprisingly, the game does provide some achievements to unlock. Considering how you can use exploding cars to kill ducks and even get rewarded for missing 30 shots in a row, there is plenty of fun to be had for the price you pay. Duckpocalypse wasn’t on our top 10 list right away, but having played it a few times, it is an excellent way to get rid of excess stress for sure. Definitely a title worth picking up, especially given its low price tag. Let the duck hunting begin!
