Battle Royale games in virtual reality have a certain appeal. Pitting teams of people against one in another until online one remains standing is a pretty interesting concept. Stand Out: VR Battle Royale aims to tap into this market and does surprisingly well. For the price of $24.99, owners of the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift will certainly have a good time playing this game. That is, assuming there will be a community which keeps playing the game for the months to come.
Stand Out: VR Battle Royale has Potential
When it comes to playing online games in virtual reality, it is evident there is an uncertain future ahead. Compared to computer and console gamers, VR has not successfully made a big impact in the online FPS department. By embracing a battle royale game, things may eventually turn around. Stand Out: VR Battle Royale may be the game to convince enough people to give this genre a try. So far, the game is still in early access, but it looks very good and plays without any major problems.
Similar to PUBG and Fortnite, players are flown to a remote map and they need to jump out to start gathering weapons, armor, et cetera. There’s also a “circle” which players need to move into unless they want to keep taking damage and eventually die. It is evident moving across the 400 hectares map will be quite a challenge in VR, but it works rather well. Free movement certainly works well, although it’s understandable some players want teleportation or some other methods to move across the map. It’s something for the developers to keep in mind, but free movement certainly works for now.
As you complete games – and hopefully win a few rounds – players will be given access to in-game loot boxes. These boxes do not cost real money and can only be obtained by earning in-game currency. Winning a game against 29 other players – or bots – is a lot more difficult than it sounds. Thankfully, there’s a growing arsenal of weapons to ensure you can pick off opponents as soon as they show up on the map. Matchmaking in the game can take up to five minutes, but even without sufficient players, there will be enough bots to fill the gaps.
All things considered, Stand Out: VR Battle Royale will certainly fill the void in the online FPS market. It is a well-done game, even though it’s not necessarily original in any way. At the same time, embracing the tried and tested game model may work in its favor in the long run. The graphics could certainly be better, and the lack of an option to form squads is a shame. At the same time, it’s still in Early Access, and we have high hopes for future updates provided by the developers.
