In Death Review – Great Archery Gameplay in a Dark Medieval Setting

It seems we are bound to get some very interesting VR games on our hands in the coming months. Assuming In Death is any indication, things will certainly get very interesting moving forward. While the game is still in Early Access, we decided to check it out regardless. The gameplay focuses on archery in a very dark and creepy setting. In Death is available for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift for the price of $19.99.

In Death has a ton of Potential

One of the things a lot of VR games really lack is a satisfying progression system. In Death checks a lot of the right boxes here, considering it is a system that will keep you coming back for more content. Players who like sneaky and stealthy gameplay will have a blast playing this title, even though it does tend to focus on dungeon crawling as well. Your game environment has a dark medieval feel to it, and all levels are randomly generated for more fun to be had. It is a job well done by the developers.

On the topic of the game’s difficulty, progressing further into the game will effectively result in bigger challenges to overcome. Since every “dungeon” is randomly generated, these challenges tend to vary quite a bit. Any achievement you complete within the game results into more game elements the developers will throw your way in the future levels. It is evident In Death has a high replayability factor, which we can only appreciate. Once you unlock all of the available achievements, however, things may taper off a bit. For now, that will take most players several weeks, if not months, to reach.

Unfortunately, In Death lacks a story to keep players engaged. It is evident this is to be expected from an early access title, yet it is still somewhat disappointing to see right now. There is a background story to keep in mind, but it’s nothing incredibly unique either. It is possible this will change over time, but for the time being, it seems we will have to be content with the huge amount of gameplay itself. Thankfully, the wide range of enemies you face along the way makes the game very enjoyable.

Shooting the bow feels satisfying and natural, which is good to see. It feels as if the game developers effectively practiced their archery skills before developing this game. Moving around the game world is based on teleportation, which is something players will either love or hate. The graphics are great, although they could be a bit more polished in certain regards. All things considering, In Death offers a very compelling package, especially for an early access title.
